Places to Visit and Family-friendly Activities

BEACHES: provides a nice overview of the options for beach visits. March is a lovely time to visit to the beach, and it may even be warm enough to swim! Among the more beautiful beaches near Tampa are Clearwater, Ft. DeSoto, and Indian Rocks. Be sure to have some quarters for parking at the public beaches. Ft. DeSoto is a county park and does require both an entrance fee, as well as the cost of tolls to get to the island.


SUNKEN GARDENS, ST. PETERSBURG is a curated garden space over 100 a years old. The city recently took control and accepts visitors Monday-Saturday 10AM-4:30PM and Sunday 12PM-4:30PM. Admission for adults is $8, with discounts for seniors and children 2-11. Children under 2 are free. Parking is free. 727.551.3102


BUSCH GARDENS is located just a few blocks from the University of South Florida. The park is open 10AM-6PM and admissions prices vary. 888.800.5447


The DALI MUSEUM houses an unparalled collection of Salvador Dali’s work. It is located in downtown St. Petersburg and open 10AM-5:30PM; parking is $10 and tickets are $24, but discounts are available depending on student, military, police, firefighter, senior, and child status.


The TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART is located downtown near the Glazer Children’s Museum. The museum is open Monday-Thursday 11AM-7PM, Friday 11AM-8PM, and Saturday and Sunday 11AM-5PM. Prices for adults are $10; the museum houses both permanent and travelling exhibitions.

There are several areas to HIKE in and near Tampa. Of course, the BAYSHORE LINEAR TRAIL is right near by the conference center and Marriott hotel, and is the longest unbroken sidewalk in the world! This is where the Jim Berlin Memorial Run will be held on Saturday, March 21st.


Tampa has a number of state parks nearby. An hour’s drive north is Weeki Wachee Spring State Park. Until April 1st, Paddling Adventures is offering a 15% off coupon on kayak and canoe rentals. The Weeki Wachee River is beautifully clear, and until late March, manatees can be seen in the river.


The FLORIDA AQUARIUM is located in downtown Tampa. Tickets are approximately $20 per person. Hours for the aquarium are 9:30AM-5PM and parking costs an additional $6. An outdoor water play area is included in admittance.


The LOWRY PARK ZOO is located north of the downtown area. Rated one of the best zoos in the country, passes range from $20-$25 depending on age. The zoo is open 9:30AM-5PM every day, and parking is free.


MOSI, or the MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY, is located across the street from the University of South Florida and north of the downtown area. MOSI is open 10AM-5PM Monday through Friday and 10AM-6PM Saturday and Sunday. MOSI has an IMAX theater, a ropes course, and a zip line, along with several exhibits for children and adults of all ages.


The GLAZER CHILDRENS MUSEUM is located in downtown Tampa. They are open M-F 10AM-5PM, Saturday 10AM-6PM, Sunday 1PM-6PM. Adult admission is $15 and children 1-12 are $9.50. Military, teachers, and seniors receive discounted admission at $12.50. 813.443.3861
